Mommy Life Lesson with Shakira

Hello to a new week, filled with the potential for new experiences and opportunities.

I saw this amazing post update by one of my dearest friends on Facebook & I just had to share it with y’all.

Meet Shakira Bodasing

On Sunday eve we decided to go late night shopping in Sandton. This isn’t a horror story about being hijacked or mugged…I promise.

My daughter and I went to Truworths (clothing store). She did her usual thing – running between the clothing rails – playing hide and seek with mommy. I did my usual thing – pretending to play hide and seek while I tried to search in vain for something pretty to fit my Shakira hips (those big hips don’t lie).

Suddenly she ran towards me and screamed: “Mommy it’s our song! Let’s dance!” (to my horror).

I looked around nervously at the other shoppers, happily grinning awaiting my dance moves. Instead I sheepishly responded: “Okay pumpkin, in just a bit, mommy is still shopping.”

Of course it was a lie. Mom was too shy! She nodded and continued her hide and seek. Back home, before going to bed, it struck me…like an AHA moment that Oprah talks about. I felt a sense of regret. I lost the moment. I lost the entire plot of life at that very moment. I didn’t seize the opportunity to “dance like no one was watching” with my daughter. I was a total jerk in fact 😀 I made a decision that night to never let a moment like that slip away, because that moment may never come again. A precious life lesson taught to me by my 3 year old daughter. Dance like no one is watching. Seize the moment. Thank you Kitara. This is my thank you note to you.

Parenting is an ever-changing, dynamic process that requires as much inward reflection as outward preparation. It is, as one of my colleagues shared, a path of service. When we embody motherhood, we give birth, not only to our children, but also to life.

It’s a simple but quite effective song by Taylor Swift. She recalls all those special memories with her mother in childhood. Taylor also sings about having a wonderful day with the woman who birthed her.

  1. I regret AHA moments that I let slip away. However, I couldn't dance in front of anyone except my grand kids lol. They think it's funny to see my dance, others would be horrified by my utterly and complete lack of rhythm lol. I love Taylor Swift. This song is great.

That brought tears to my eyes because I can feel the regret. This is a good lesson to me as well to let go of the shyness in those moments and just live life.

  3. Shakira is such a great person! This lesson is so great.

  4. Everything about this is beautiful, The words written, Shakira, Kitara, Alfonzo and anyone who realizes how true these words are!

  5. Shakira Bodasing says:

"And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to bloom". Thanks for your kind words. I will most definitely not let a moment like this pass me by again!

  6. Such an amazing post, really love this. It's something most of us are guilty of. Worrying abt wat others think of you. It's very inspiring to read this. It's also just being you, no matter where you are 🙂

That was definitely worth sharing. I was in teas after reading your post. I am sometimes guilty of not spending time with my Mom, but thank you for the reminder to spend time with people who matter. It's these little moments with our loved ones that make life more meaningful – moments that we should cherish and not take for granted.

  8. Kathy Myers says:

Since having grands I realize those moments so much more. I wish I could turn back the clock. Thanks for sharing!

I would feel shy about doing that too but your right it is a lost moment. Still don't regret the moments that could have been and create new moments instead.

Sometimes, children can teach us our greatest life lessons. All we have to do is open our hearts.

  15. Eileen Kelly says:

I love your post! I am not a shy person and I will dance anywhere but my issue is sometimes as a stay at home working mom, I miss moments as the kids are talking and just yes. You have made me say Aha t that and I am making my computer and whatnot secondary. I hope you get a chance soon to dance away in the mall!

  16. Thank you Shakira, Kitara and Alfonzo for sharing this AHA moment with us. Definitely a lesson to not let those precious moments pass us by

  17. Elizabeth O. says:

It's those little moments that we tend to neglect that hit us the most. I've had moments like that with my twins! Just like you, I made a promise to myself not to let a moment like that pass by.

  18. This is a great lesson to learn. We should all take the time to appreciate the little things.

  19. Jamela P says:

I love the quote at the end!! It is so true. My kids ran away with my hearts when they smiled.

  20. What a beautiful story this is. It is very emotional and lovely.

  21. Such an adorable story! Enjoy every moment being with her because it is going to fly by quickly!

  22. Azlin Bloor says:

I love this post, and I think she's right, we need to live in the moment more often. As far as my kids are concerned, I am 100% sure that we do that, it's easy for us, being homeschoolers, I think we have a different mindset to parents whose kids go to endless extra curricular activities.
BUT, where my mum is concerned, I have a very bad track record. It doesn't help that she lives thousands of miles away and in the last 10 years, I've only seen her twice. Must do better, so thank you for the reminder.

  23. Don't have regrets, just try and do it differently next time. We all learn lessons along the way.

  24. Parenthood is indeed a roller coaster ride, fun, tiring and exciting.

  25. Very touching. I am also shy, but have found that my kids give me courage to do something that I wouldn't otherwise do alone.

  26. That is such a touching treat! Moments like that are related to feelings like regret and guilt which i do not want in my life, and for that special someone as well.
